| Description | The scientific study of human society, including ways in which groups, social institutions, and individuals affect each other. Causes of social stability and social change are explored through the application of various theoretical perspectives, key concepts, and related research methods of sociology. Analysis of social issues in their institutional context may include topics such as social stratification, gender, race/ethnicity, and deviance. | ||||||||

Upon successful completion of this course, students will: 1) Compare and contrast the basic theoretical perspectives of sociology. 2) Identify the various methodological approaches to the collection and analysis of data in sociology. 3) Describe key concepts in sociology. 4) Describe the empirical findings of various subfields of sociology. 5) Explain the complex links between individual experiences and broader institutional forces. |

Week 1 (January 15, 2024) No Class due to MLK Day Week 2 (January 22, 2024) No class Week 3 (January 29, 2024) Introduction, Overview and Chapter 1: Introduction to Sociology Week 4 (February 5, 2024) Chapter 2: Sociological Investigation and Chapter 3: Culture Week 5 (February 12, 2024) Chapter 4: Society and Chapter 6: Social Interaction. Homework for weeks 2-4 will be due at this time. Exam #1 to be taken home and turned in at the beginning of the next class. Week 6 (February 19, 2024) Exam #1 to be turned in at this time. Chapter 5: Socialization and Chapter 11: Social Stratification Week 7 (February 26, 2024) Chapter 8: Groups and Organizations and Chapter 10: Deviance Week 8 (March 4, 2024) Chapter 24: Social Movements and Chapter 25: Social Change. Homework for weeks 5-7 will be due at this time. Week 9 (March 11, 2024) Spring Break Week 10 (March 18, 2024) Exam #2 to be taken in class. Week 11 (March 25, 2024) Chapter 21: Education and Chapter 19: Family Week 12 (April 1, 2024) Chapter 15: Race / Ethnicity and Chapter 16: Age & Relationships Week 13 (April 8, 2024) Chapter 18: Politics and Government and Chapter 20: Religion. Students should also contact their course faculty to report their quarantine status.
